Known also as the ”Subtitling” division, our main objective is to create well-prepared teams for each interested community, their role being to offer guidance and mentoring in their native language to all those who want to translate Asian dramas and movies on Rakuten Viki.
Without being required to go through a Subbing Academy to translate on Viki, we admit that we must have a high level of passion and interest in quality subtitles. It's unpleasant to see new contributors starting their activity without any guidance and feedback about their quality, but that's how things are now, and we don't have any other option than coping with it and moving forward.
Driven by our passion for better and improvement, we have today 8 Subbing academies:
- Dutch Subbing Academy
- French Subbing Academy
- German Subbing Academy
- Hindi Subbing Academy
- Italian Subbing Academy
- Portuguese Subbing Academy
- Romanian Subbing Academy
- Spanish Subbing Academy
Each academy is coordinated by a Subbing Moderator and their team of Sensei and Jr. Sensei. While the Subbing Moderator is chosen by the NSSA admin team based on community feedback, the Sensei and Jr. Sensei of each academy are elected by the Subbing Moderator of the respective academy. Together they make sure to create the entire program needed for their academy without missing:
- a Google Form to sign up for the mentoring program;
- a presentation of their academy and a set of rules;
- solid and well-researched feedback for the students;
- all the needed materials needed for finishing the program.
Despite having a set of common rules to be followed by all the academies, each of them has the autonomy to establish their own mentoring program and graduation system.
Since the amount of time and involvement is at a very high level, NSSA made sure to reward the staff and the graduates with NSSA-made badges that can be added to their ”About Me” section from their Viki profile. Moreover, all the graduates are granted an academy-specific collection badge added by the Viki staff on the dedicated section for collection badges from the Viki profile. To find out what these badges mean for each Subbing academy, we recommend you check their programs. But for sure we can state that these badges are just for those who can commit to providing quality subtitles from their Subtitler role on Viki.
As we said above, each Academy has the liberty to create its program according to its needs while still being under the NSSA and Viki regulations. But what we can say for sure is that all the academies have the same set of testing channels to be used for mentoring and testing the students. These testing channels are actual Korean/Chinese dramas but exclusively used on NSSA so not accessible to normal users.
At the end of our presentation, we would like to point out that a Subbing Academy is not for teaching what should have been learned in the educational system but it's for improving and adapting your already existing knowledge to the expectations of Viki subtitles. The academies are not looking for perfection but for sure they are looking for good contributors willing to build their Viki experience based on a solid knowledge ground in both English and the native language.
