Segging Division Presentation

Also known as the "segmenting" division, our main objective is to create the foundation for well-timed subtitles. The NSSA segging program is divided into two parts: Sandbox and Academy. In the Sandbox, you will familiarize yourself with the segmenting tools and expectations. Following this, you will advance to the Academy to improve and perfect your skills. We highly recommend completing the entire program — both Sandbox and Academy — to be thoroughly prepared for segmenting projects.

The Academy consists of five levels, each taught by a different sensei. At the end of the program, you will take a graduation test to assess your learning. This test includes both a short written portion and a practical segmenting portion.

Segging Sandbox & Academy FAQ

How long will it take until I am accepted into the program?
If you applied to Segging Academy, you can expect to enter the Sandbox portion of the program within a few weeks to a few months. Depending on the time of the year, the wait time may be longer or shorter.

How long will my temporary qualified contributor (QC) status last?
Students without QC status may receive temporary QC status in order to gain access to necessary videos during the program. Your account will have QC status for exactly two months. If you are currently paying for the Viki Pass and do not achieve true QC status during that time, your subscription will resume after the two months have ended.

I sent a message to my sensei five days ago, but they have still not responded. What should I do now?
If you do not hear from your sensei within five days of completing your assignment or corrections, please send another message to verify that your sensei received it. If you still do not receive a reply after two days, you may send a message to the Assigning Administrator Stariz or bjohnsonwong, who will check in with your sensei. If neither hear back from the sensei, you will be assigned a new instructor.

What do I do if the video I was assigned in not available in my region?

If you cannot access your video, please let your sensei know. Your sensei will help you find a workaround or assign you a video from a different channel.

Why are more students graduating from the sandbox than the academy?

The Segmenting Sandbox is the introductory stage of the program, allowing students to become familiar with the art of segmenting. Students are not required to continue to the Academy, but it is recommended for those who wish to contribute in future projects. Because completing the entire program (Sandbox and Academy) is not mandatory, and because some students inevitably drop out of the Academy before finishing, more students graduate from the Sandbox than the Academy.

Why can't we work on outside segmenting projects while training in the program?
We hope to provide you with all the training resources you need in order to become an effective segmenter or subtitler for "real life" projects. We ask that you please wait to work on outside projects until you have graduated and demonstrated an ability for quality contributions. If you are going through the Segging Academy, you may still work on subtitling projects. If an exception is needed, please contact your sensei.

How long does it take to go through the entire program?

The answer to this largely depends on your availability and effort. Generally, you can expect to spend about three months in the program. However, some trainees are able to graduate in less than a month, while others spend six months or more in the program.

Do I need to add segments for on-screen text that is irrelevant to the scene (e.g., random shop signs, house numbers, etc.)?
No, it is not necessary to add segments for on-screen text that is not relevant. If you are not sure whether something is relevant, add a segment for it just in case.

Graduation FAQ

Do I take the written exam before or after segmenting the graduation videos?

We recommend taking the written exam before submitting your videos. In most cases, you will not receive your video score until your written exam has been completed.

When will I receive the results for my graduation videos?
Please allow up to 15 days for the panel to review your videos. If you have not received a score within 15 days, make sure the panel received your notifications by checking the sent messages in your Inbox. If the notifications went through, please send a new message to your Final Panelist to find out the status of your videos.

Do I need to add team credits in the graduation videos?
Although we ask that you please add credits in each Academy level for practice, it is NOT necessary to add team credits in the graduation videos.

Can I retake the written or video exam if I don't pass?
Yes, you can retake the exams. If you would like additional training before retaking the video exam, this option will be available to you.

After Graduation FAQ

How do I find projects after graduation?

If you would like to volunteer at an on-air project, check to see if any channels in the On-Air or Coming Soon categories are in need of contributors. Generally, you will be able to tell if a team is already full or still needs help by checking the team's volunteer list (if it exists) on the channel wall. The NSSA Discord Server will also announce new channels and if positions are available. As a graduate of Ninja Academy, you will periodically receive invites from Ninja staff to join teams on a first come, first serve basis.

How do I become a Jr. Sensei (aka teaching assistant)? How do I become a Sensei?

After graduating from Segging Academy, you can either request to become a Jr. Sensei or receive an invitation to join the team. We seek Jr. Senseis who have demonstrated some experience and active participation in segmenting projects. As a Jr. Sensei, you will be paired with an experienced mentor (Sensei) who will guide you until they feel you’re ready to take on the full responsibilities of a Sensei independently. We are always looking for new Jr. Sensei and Sensei. Please contact bjohnsonwong if you are interested!
