EEA - General Editor (GE) Program

What is a General Editor (GE)?

General Editors (GE) play a pivotal role in the second level of editing subtitles. Their primary responsibility is to refine grammar according to American English standards and ensure subtitles are formatted correctly as per Viki's guidelines and Team Notes.

Key Tasks:
  • Correct grammar and formatting issues.
  • Maintain consistency in names, titles, and plot details.
  • Follow the established subtitle guidelines to deliver polished and accurate translations.
Requirement:
  • GEs must have high-level fluency in American English, with a strong grasp of grammar and language usage.

General Editor (GE) Minimum Requirements

1. High-Level Fluency in American English
  • Must be skilled at editing for grammar, punctuation, and colloquial usage without distorting the original meaning.

2. Thorough Knowledge of American English Grammar
  • The GE ensures subtitles adhere to American grammar standards.
  • Knowledge includes the correct use of American spelling (e.g., "color" instead of "colour").
  • The GE should also know when to replace slang or idioms to suit the tone and audience.

3. Cultural Understanding of the Project’s Source Language
  • While not essential, a basic understanding or willingness to research the culture (e.g., Chinese, Korean, Thai, or Japanese) is highly valued.
  • This helps in ensuring culturally appropriate subtitling when reviewing names, honorifics, or cultural contexts.

For detailed responsibilities, refer to the Viki Editor and Subtitles Formatting Guidelines.
