STEP 1 - Criteria for the Language Academy Moderator position
Once there is an interest in establishing a Language Academy, we will inform the entire community about it and we will ask all those interested to apply for the Language Subbing Academy Moderator position. We will wait just one week for the applications. Here are the criteria for this position:
- ACTIVITY TIME
- Minimum of 2 years, with constant activity to avoid the situation of being active just from time to time during these 2 years.
- CONTRIBUTION COUNT
- We want at least 100,000 subtitles, counting up to 200,000 subtitles at maximum since there can be many factors influencing this count.
- VIKI ROLES COUNT
- You must have a history of the following roles:
- Channel Manager
- Language Moderator
- Language Editor
- Language Subtitler
- Since the project number for each of these roles is influenced by various factors, we will count them up to a maximum of 10 per role.
- APPLICATION CONTENT
- Send us your application containing the answers to these questions:
- Why do you want an academy for your language? - this question is not required in case we are looking for a new Moderator on an existing academy.
- What makes you a suitable candidate for the Language Academy Moderator position?
- If there will be opposition towards the academy, how you would deal with it?
- What will be your top 3 criteria for recruiting your Sensei and Jr. Sensei?
- What will be your top 3 criteria for accepting students?
- What will be your top 3 principles that will lead your entire activity as the moderator of your community academy?
- Do you think there are other contributors as capable as you for this position? Name a maximum of 3 usernames.
- The application must be sent via Viki Inbox to amypun, mazza, bjohnsonwong, dimghro, in just one conversation.
STEP 2 - After we close the application for the Moderator position
- After we close the application for the Language Subbing Academy Moderator position, we will start collecting the contributors from the respective community to send them the Feedback Form that will include all those interested and eligible for the position in question. Please note that:
- Only the contributors active for the past 3-4 months, depending on the community size, will be targeted. We will check the contribution history.
- It will be a great help if we can receive a list of the contributors from the candidates, as complete as possible, regardless of the team they are part of.
- The Feedback Form will consist of 5 sections:
- Section 1 - introduction and a field to fill in your username
- Section 2 - 2 questions about the respondent-candidate collaboration
- Section 3 - 5 evaluation criteria at a local community level
- Section 4 - 4 evaluation criteria of their knowledge and skills in the native language
- Section 5 - 2 questions about contributor’s expectations and their vision for the academy (the answers to these questions will be forwarded to the elected candidate without disclosing the respondent's username)
- Please note the following:
- The main scope of the form is to have an overview of all the candidates, namely how they are received by their community so the results will not impact any candidate's activity on Viki.
- The results will be accessible for the NSSA Admin team only (amypun, mazza, bjohnsonwong, dimghro). Only the answers to the questions from Section 5 will be passed to the elected candidate but without disclosing the usernames.
STEP 3 - The final NSSA Admin decision + starting the founding
- We will analyze internally the feedback and we will make a final decision regarding the one we will appoint as Language Subbing Academy Moderator. After we will announce it publicly.
- We will ask the appointed moderator to come up with their academy way of working in a maximum of two weeks.
- As soon as the new Language Academy is established, we will make the final announcement about having a new one under NSSA.
FAQ
This section will be filled as we receive questions from the contributors by filling out this form: https://forms.gle/FFqG3HJA43i7cg4N9
Why there is a cap to the contribution count and Viki roles?
Because we don't want to leave the impression that higher numbers will mean higher chances to be elected. There are multiple factors that influence those numbers, so we can’t take into consideration only the big numbers. It's just to see the involvement of each candidate.
Who creates this list? Should the applicants as Language Academy moderators create this list themselves and send it along or is this list created by the NSSA?
As we already mentioned in STEP 2, anyone can send us a list. But yes, we will also take advantage of the applicants and ask each of them to help us with a list. But at the same time, we will be doing our own verification to make sure that the provided list is not a preferential one. The same verification will happen even if there is just one applicant.
Would it be possible for you to create a DOC where interested people who meet the relevant requirements can register themselves?
We would like to avoid letting the community sign up for the Feedback Form because:
- might not reach as many members of the community (because they don't check Discussions too often, because they just translate and do not take part in the community discussions but this doesn't mean they are not interested in what's going on in their community);
- continuing the above idea, this could lead to the Feedback Form being received just by a part of the community which can happen to be favorable to one or more candidates only.
I want to suggest a Subbing Academy for my language. How do I do that?
If you meet the requirements for the Language Subtitling Academy Moderator position, send us your application according to APPLICATION CONTENT, and we will publicly announce your interest in having an academy for your language and we will open the application session to be sure that all those interested in the position have a chance.
Like the segmenting academy, will the subbing academy be required, or will it be optional? Let's say a subber decides not to join X Academy, will they still be able to contribute without having the badge?
The Subbing Academy is not mandatory to be accepted in any team but it may be a good thing to go through the mentoring of an Academy (if your language has one) to improve your knowledge and skills and why not, to help others doing the same. This way you will help for sure your community and Viki to have the most well-prepared subtitlers.
