Hi, NSSA-Viki community! 😊 Are you ready to embark on a new adventure with us? Yes, you read right; we will start our adventure on the NSSA blog with many interesting articles about NSSA, Viki, and many other topics related to Asian entertainment and culture. 😍 And what other great way to start this adventure than writing about all the new stuff that happened in 2024. 🥳
So, before going into waiting mode for the new articles, let's just dive into what happened last year at NSSA. We had a blast with all the new things, and we are sure that you also saw us very active all over the place, so we thought to put everything very organized in this article as an overview of 2024. 🤓
So, without any further ado, let's start! 🏃♂️
🎓 JANUARY 2024
- The year started with a very big announcement: the Subbing Division was resumed after a long pause with the appointment of a new contributor as its moderator: dimghro.
- We started working on a new procedure for opening new language academies.
- We organized and opened the official Discord server of NSSA, a place where the entire NSSA is organized and all its staff, segging students, and all graduates can connect and help for a better community on Viki.
- We established our collaboration with the biggest unofficial Discord server for all the Viki contributors: Viki Contributor Community, aka VCC. Many thanks to its founder, anyelasspace, for accepting our collaboration proposal.
🎓 FEBRUARY 2024
- We officially reopened the Subbing Division for new Language Subbing Academies. We received applications to open subbing academies for German, Spanish, and Hungarian. Thus, we started the founding procedure for them.
- We also started the procedure to find a new moderator for the already existing paused French Subbing Academy.
- With this new procedure, we now have an official page on the website where you can find all the needed information if you want to open a Subbing Academy for your community: HERE.
🎓 MARCH 2024
- We announced the change of the old NSSA website with this new one together with a form where ideas about it could be passed on.
- We finished founding 2 new subbing academies, Spanish and German, and resumed the French one. Based on their community's feedback, we appointed as moderators eun_soo_lee_2 for Spanish, animarina_677 for German, and deval_chloe for French.
🎓 APRIL 2024
- We resumed the practice of rewarding the graduates with an NSSA-made appreciation certificate, and we came with a brand new appreciation certificate.
- After a long time without dedicated training channels, the Subbing Division received its first batch of 4 training channels from Viki. A new batch of training channels is on its way!
🎓 MAY 2024
- We received a new request for a Subbing Academy: Hindi. So, soon after, we started the procedure of establishing it.
🎓 JUNE 2024
- We officially announced the founding of the Hindi Subbing Academy, with shraddhasingh as its moderator based on Hindi community feedback.
- In the month's beginning, we were on the situation of looking for a new moderator for the Portuguese Subbing Academy, so we started the procedure. Toward the end of the month, we finally finished the procedure, and cerejacult was appointed as the new PSA moderator based on the Portuguese community feedback.
🎓 JULY 2024
- We started to recruit NSSA staff for the Discord server, given the increasing number of members and content to be maintained, so 2 new contributors joined our Discord staff team: baepsae29 and hanjingyi.
- We made the first announcement about the upcoming English Editing Academy, aka EEA. The need for EEA was something that started with Viki's request since now all the series are already pre-subbed in English by their paid translators, so we really need very well-prepared editors. Shortly after this first announcement, we started forming the EEA team.
- At the end of July 2024, the EEA team started to work on the EEA Guidelines regarding the activity and subtitles formatting as Translation Editor, General Editor, and Chief Editor.
- We appointed a new moderator for the Dutch Subbing Academy as the former one decided to pass on the role to damiechan, who was already a Sensei at the DSA.
🎓 OCTOBER 2024
- We started the month with probably the most awaited change: the new NSSA website. We constantly working on it to add all the information about NSSA and its programs.
🎓 DECEMBER 2024
- We posted on the website the EEA Guidelines made by the EEA team and validated by Viki. So, we really encourage the TE, GE, and CE editors to follow them closely in their editing activity.
🎓Segmenting Academy Changes and Events in 2024
The Segmenting Academy had 70 students complete the course and graduate in 2024.
NSSA celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2024. It’s hard to believe we’ve been active and still growing this long. It has grown tremendously since founded January 7th 2014 by AmyPun and Mazza. The Sensei of the Segmenting School are all passionate and eager to help volunteers learn segmenting and help them become the best segmenters possible.
There have been major changes in the duties of segmenters this year. We have had to pivot from making a blank segment for subtitles to be entered into, to working with segments already created with subtitles. Segmenting now involves checking and making changes as needed to make these subtitles the best they can be for our viewers to be able to read clearly and comfortably. Segmenters often work in many different languages already subtitled, the most common being, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. This change involved restructuring the Segmenting School to teach students how to incorporate those needs.
The Segmenting Academy is still very active and growing more and more with new students completing the course and graduating regularly. We hope to be continuing to grow and support the Viki Community throughout the future to create the best possible foundation for subtitles.
Gosh! 🤯 What a year...
We almost forgot everything that happened, and we can't believe that 2024 was such a full year with many new things happening and some still ongoing... we will announce them soon. Of course, we must thank all the Viki contributors who helped us restart the full NSSA. 🥰 You are a very great and inspirational support for us, and we really hope to see you more involved day by day and help us to spread the importance of being an NSSA graduate on Rakuten Viki. 💪
