What is a Translation Editor (TE)?
A Translation Editor (TE) plays a crucial role as the first step in the editing process. Their primary responsibility is to ensure the accuracy of pre-subbed translations while addressing any un-subbed dialogue, onscreen text, original soundtrack (OST) lyrics, and cultural nuances that must be communicated to the audience.
TEs must have:
- High proficiency in the source language.
- A solid, conversational understanding of American English, or advanced skills for complex genres like historical dramas.
Example: A TE working on a Korean movie needs to be fluent in Korean and proficient in English to deliver accurate and culturally sensitive translations.
Translation Editor (TE) Minimum Requirements
- Fluency/Proficiency in the Source Language - TEs must be fluent enough to understand the content without subtitles and identify translation errors.
- Conversational Understanding of American English - The TE must skillfully convey the message from the source language to English, with advanced skills required for genres like legal, medical, or historical dramas.
- Cultural Understanding of the Source Language - TEs are expected to interpret cultural nuances such as honorifics, titles, and cultural context. They also ensure accurate translations of onscreen signs and culturally relevant details.
