Segging Graduation Exam

The segmenting exam is a way to test what you have learned in the program. In order to graduate and earn the official Ninja Academy badge, all students must pass the exam. There is no limit to the amount of times you can take the exam, so no one can ever really "fail"!

There are two main parts to the exam:
  1. Written Exam: 10 questions
  2. Video Exam: 10 minutes total

Written Exam Information

This is the easiest part of the exam because the lessons in the Segging Academy prepare you for the test. All questions are based on the information in the Segging Guide. There are 10 multiple choice questions.
  • A score of 90% is required to pass this portion.
  • You have an opportunity to re-answer any questions you miss if you do not pass the first time.

Video Exam Information

The purpose for this test is to show that you can evaluate segment quality and fix segments. Just like you practiced in the Academy, you can delete and/or recut segments when necessary, but do not erase them all and recut them. The idea is to preserve as many of the original segments as possible while fixing the video. Please do your best to adjust the segments so that the end result is a well-segmented video. Remember to follow the segmenting guidelines outlined in the Segmenting Guide or in the Segmenting Guide Quick Reference!
  • A score of 93% or better is required to pass the video portion of the exam.
  • Your videos will be graded based on timing and composition (extensions, gaps, segment length, missing/extra segments).

Reminders:
  • Segments should extend 1.0-1.2 seconds before a no-voice (silent) section.
  • Avoid gaps less than 0.5 seconds. Watch out for flashing due to micro-gaps and mini-gaps!
  • In general, please avoid having more than one sentence per segment. However, if the sentences are very short, more than one sentence will be acceptable.
  • Please avoid segments that are too long. Try to keep a segment to between 1-5 seconds in length or 6 seconds if including an extension. Some sentences may need to be split into two segments if too long to be easily read in one segment.
  • Avoid two voices together in one segment unless one is under 1 second in length.
  • In addition to voice, important text must also be segmented. This includes signs, cell phone messages, hardsubs, and episode numbers.
  • Please add segments for OSTs and songs with audible and clear lyrics.
  • You do not have to insert a team credit ("Subtitles brought to you by The __________ Team at Viki").
  • Be sure to preserve the subtitles in both English and Portuguese.
Go positively into this test because we are all there with you rooting you to success!
