Translating and segmenting on Rakuten Viki isn’t just about creating subtitles, it’s about teamwork, passion, and the shared love for bringing stories to life. While every volunteer plays an individual role, the process itself is highly collaborative. Whether it’s dividing tasks, troubleshooting tricky phrases, or simply supporting one another through long projects, working alongside fellow translators and segmenters makes the experience even more rewarding.

There is not just a best part but the entire experience is the best. This month, I passed the nice number of 4 years since I joined Viki as a contributor, and even though it is not such a big deal (there are much older contributors on Viki), I still feel like I've been through a lot of things to be able to say now that the entire experience of being a Viki contributor is the best.But still, at this moment, there is one thing I can consider one of the best parts of working with other fellow contributors: the team I'm part of. And I say it like this because despite being the initiator, we are now a group of great and fun people coordinating the activity together with the rest of the team through our periodic feedback collecting.I've been through a lot of phases since I joined, I tried all kinds of ways of working, and I met all types of people. But since I managed to finally have this team that really values people and good subtitles, I must admit that I moved to the next level of satisfaction. Being part of this team makes my daily life on Viki much brighter, and their opinion is everything that matters. I'm glad that they understood the aim of the team and they decided to work on achieving this aim. After many failed attempts, when I had big issues trusting people on Viki, this team managed to change a part of my perception and showed me that we can still have that team that can boost you to be even more active. I must thank all those who asked me to create back a new Discord server, and I don't regret accepting their request. We are for sure not perfect in our activity, but we are doing for sure our best to be better together.So yeah, probably the people are the best part, regardless of having a good or bad experience with them. I've learned a lot from both categories, and this is what made me the way I'm at this point. So, people on Viki can really have a great impact on you, and they are probably the most influential part of our activity.And I also need to be grateful to anyelasspace for bringing to life this server. Since I started to use Discord for Viki and more contributors started to join, everything changed completely. I just love the possibility of having REAL chats with everyone, which makes everything much easier in understanding each other and having a much more efficient activity.P.S.: I almost forgot to thank my team for bearing with all my ideas and changes I make when they expect the less. But I'm sure they understand my reasons 😂.
My favorite part about working with fellow segmenters/translators is their kindness and willingness to lift each other up. No question is too mundane or simple and they are always willing to dive into a subject to find the best possible results.It is wonderful to find such truly kind and encouraging people who have similar interests to me. We get to laugh, learn, and language together which are most of my favorite things. ❤️ Thank you all for existing and trying to put your best self forward. I appreciate you all!
I want to write about how I like to work with the translators because if I will consider to be segmenter I am sure many senseis will hate me after trying to make me understand 🤣 😂 . Since 2016, till now, I met a lot of interesting users (as translator, moderator and CM) on Viki. As CM, my first experience on Viki was a sad one, but after meeting bjonhnsonwong and kakashiandme I discovered a new world as CM, a pleasant one. As CM I met some interesting Moderators and I want to mention one of them, as she made cry after singing ”Happy Birthday” to me and she left me a precious PM animarina_677 is about you 💖 ! As Moderator, I met a lot of users and some of them changed my perception about people. I realized that I am naive, that some of them took advantage of me, but also I met many users who helped me to resist on Viki until now. I am a very friendly person, I love to joke around and not many of the translators from the team can understand my jokes, but I continue to joke and sometimes I love my jokes so much, that dimghro created a sticker for me „How good are my jokes. Ha haha” 😂 . I should be serious now and I would like to write a ”BIG THANK YOU” for the translators with whom I currently work. Guys, none of us is perfect, but we do a great job as a team!
I'm not much of a talker, but I thought I should answer this question. This global network of connections between languages makes me feel so good. It's like being far away but close at the same time. Discovering people with the same interests, the same passion, in a completely different context. I can say that when I joined Viki, I thought it would be just for the subtitles, but now I know it's more than just translations or editing. I've met people from all over the world without leaving my house. They're people from my own country as well as others, and they warm our hearts by chatting, laughing, crying, and getting upset and then laughing again. It's rewarding to meet people just like us. So, the best part is this, connecting with people for a single goal: Viki. But it goes beyond any barrier.
The best part about working with fellow translators and segmenters? It’s like being in the ultimate international drama squad where everyone speaks your language—both literally and in fangirl/boy energy! You get to meet awesome new friends from all over the world, bonding over your shared love for languages, subtitles, and that one character who stole all our hearts.There’s always an epic exchange of notes and advice, from cracking the code on a tricky idiom to debating whether a title should sound regal or just slightly intimidating. And the best part? Deep-diving into the plot together! Nothing beats analyzing twists, making wild predictions, and collectively screaming when the writers decide to emotionally wreck us with a cliffhanger.And let’s be honest—fangirling (or fanboying) is practically part of the job description. Whether it’s admiring an actor’s flawless delivery, drooling over a breathtaking costume, or replaying that one scene for “research purposes,” there’s always someone who gets it.At the end of the day, it’s all about teamwork and having an absolute blast. Translating isn’t just about words—it’s about being part of an amazing, chaotic, and passionate community that turns every project into an unforgettable experience!
There are multiple reasons why I love working with fellow translators and segmenters. However, if I were to narrow it down, it is because I love being able to connect with people who share my love of Asian dramas and constant learning.I love the fact we can all squeal and swoon over actors/actresses and certain scenes together, vent our frustrations at some character’s actions, and discuss theories and endings all while translating for global viewers. Additionally, I work 100% remotely, so having this social aspect is the highlight of my mundane and hectic day at work.Secondly, although translating and segmenting is a lot of work, I am constantly learning new things from my fellow translators and segmenters. There are so many nuances in a language and cultural aspects that can affect how a dialogue is delivered and translated. Being able to bounce off ideas and learn from others is an invaluable experience and tool not only to expand my knowledge, but also to share mine.
